Marvelous Mustaches

Lots of mammals use body hair for motion detection. Cats use their whiskers to identify objects in darkness, but these sensitive hairs can even detect changing air currents in a room. Useful if an obnoxious, cat-bothering child is silently on the prowl.

Underwater, this ability can be even more helpful. Whiskers, known as vibrissae, are present in animals as diverse as hippos, river dolphins, and sea otters.

Seals, the best-studied of these groups, have the largest “mystacial vibrissae” of any mammals. These luxurious mustaches grow to at least 41 cm in length and are vital to their hunting in low visibility.

That’s One Mean Moustache

This particular hippo was spotted at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in South Africa in 2017.

“Tour guide Gerhard van der Westhuizen was in the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in South Africa when he spotted this hippo sporting what appears to be a moustache."

The animal kingdom seem can be seen supporting Movember year round! Our technicians on the other hand are working hard to fundraise and support the cause for the month of November.

Wild Animals with Mustaches | Movember Edition

This week we bring you the Mandrill, supporting Movember with his moustache!

Mandrills are the largest and most colorful of the Old World monkeys. They are related to baboons and even more so to drills. An adult male mandrill that has the brightest and most distinctive colors on his face seems to be most attractive to females.

What is Movember?

Movember is the leading charity tackling men’s health on a global scale. Men’s health is in crisis. Men are dying on average 6 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons.

Unchecked, prostate cancer rates will double over the next 15 years. Testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50. And across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 75% of all suicides.

Movember is uniquely placed to address this crisis on a global scale. They fund groundbreaking projects all over the world.

GATES UPDATE: we have already raised $220 in 2 days!

The Walrus Mustache is Trending!

A walrus mustache is a particularly famous mustache style. It is like having a beard on your upper lip. In this style, you let your moustache grow so long that it covers the entire upper lip. In most cases, it reaches the base of the beard as well, which resembles the muzzle of a walrus, hence the name.

Tip: A true walrus mustache will be exuberantly bushy, will grow down over the top lip and cover-up at least part of the mouth, though the most epic walruses will curtain over the mouth completely

This week we bring to you..the Bornean Bearded Pig!

Bearded pigs are large and long-legged pigs. They are typically most active in the morning and late afternoon. Midday is spent wallowing in mud, resting, or sleeping. In areas inhabited by humans, bearded pigs may shift to a nocturnal existence, particularly if they take to raiding crops.

Bearded pigs swim well, including between oceanic islands, and are good climbers and jumpers, even when young.

They can be found in tropical rainforests in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo, as well as a few smaller islands.

Mustaches For Movember: Year THREE

Gates Wildlife is raising funds and awareness this Movember for all the dads, brothers, sons and mates in our lives.

For over 35 years, Gates Wildlife has been committed to preserving and saving the lives of animals. In keeping with the philosophy of saving lives, we felt it was fitting to join forces in supporting this cause last year and are very excited to be apart of this amazing cause again this year.

Last year we passed our target and raised $1500! We are hoping to beat that this year!

This week we bring to you an amazing bird called an Inca Tern.

Inca terns have some of the most exceptional, refined mustaches similar to the Hungarian mustache style of humans. These mustaches can be found on both the female and the male birds. This bird is easily recognizable with its dark gray body, and red-orange beak and claws, and its perfect white moustache.

They are typically found on the Pacific coast from Peru to Chile.

Unfortunately, their populations are declining quickly because of the loss of nesting sites. and declining fish stocks are another reason. They have been included in the “close to vanishing species” category.

176 Week(s) Ago

As you all know, this month our team will be raising awareness and funds for the amazing cause that is Movember. With the beginning of Movember, we bring you our new series “Animals with Mustaches.”

Using the moustache as the driving symbol of the movement, Movember focuses on the three key areas of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health & suicide prevention.

Introducing the Emperor Tamarin Monkey, which displays one of the animal kingdom's rarest and most breathtaking mustaches.

These monkeys live in the southwest Amazon Basin. They inhabit tropical rainforests, living deep in the forest and in open-tree covered areas.
